Chapter 4 — The Walker of Neo Busan
Chapter Four — Synopsis
Mira remembered beaches.
Only fragments survived now: warm concrete after rainfall, distant harbor lights moving through fog, the smell of fish markets during summer evenings. Those memories belonged to another civilization entirely. Most of her adult life unfolded instead within the drowned outskirts beyond Neo Busan’s seawalls, crossing submerged districts where apartment towers emerged partially from the water like abandoned monuments. She moved alone through those territories in a narrow black exosuit stitched together from military polymers and flexible shell composite harvested from juvenile crabs. Across her face stretched a pale blue visor projecting sonar overlays through the fog while carbon blades rested against her back for close combat within flooded environments where conventional firearms rarely remained reliable.
Among the outer settlements she was known simply as the Walker.
Survival beyond the walls had stripped identity down to function. Scavengers harvested shell material from dead creatures. Engineers repaired desalination towers. Smugglers transported filtration enzymes extracted from crab blood into inland territories. Humanity had adapted to catastrophe with disturbing efficiency. Entire economies now depended upon the creatures themselves. Their shell composites regenerated microfractures naturally, making them invaluable for military infrastructure, while neural tissue extracted from larger specimens accelerated machine-learning systems inside the city defense networks. Even apocalypse eventually became industrialized.
